These 7 Companies Encourage Sleeping On the Job. But Why
These 7 Companies Encourage Sleeping On the Job. But WhyThese 7 Companies Encourage Sleeping On the Job. But WhyToo hard to resist the temptation to catch a quick zs after a satisfying lunch? Dont tell me, weve all been there. Sleeping on the job is something we all desire, but only few of us can afford. Most people are familiar with the 3 PM slump which threatens productivity and leads to low performance. Its that midday breaking point when your unstoppable stream of early morning motivation has given way to overwhelming sugar crash-fueled melancholy. When this moment comes, all you want is to power off your computer, lay your head on your desk and doze off without repercussions. Dont worry, youre notlage alone. According to the National Sleep Foundation, nearly 50% of Americans say that insufficient sleep affects their daily activities. And the scarcity of sleep has a far greater impact than we tend to think. The Journal of Sleep calculated that lack of sleep costs US companies a stag gering $411 tausend milliarden in lost productivity and 1.2 million working days per year. The trend of workplace napping is not likely to stop. And so is the list of employers that have introduced pods in their offices. From scrappy departureups to tech behemoths, here are 7 companies that will encourage you to rest and recharge.Table of Contents1.Huffington Post2. Uber3. Google4. Samsung5. Zappos6. Ben Jerrys7. NASAThe importance of sleepNapping isnt just for toddlersChairs, pods and nooksA nap a day keeps the doctor away1.Huffington PostArianna Huffington, the founder of the namesake media site, is a great advocate of sleeping on the job.Having collapsed from exhaustion at her desk one night - and broken her cheekbone on the way down - she decided to make health and wellness in the workplace a top priority. In Huffingtons own words, employees health is one of the most important predictors of the companys health. To prevent further accidents and foster health and well-being of the ir employees, the company dedicated two rooms to napping in its New York City offices.2. UberThe nap rooms in the ride-sharing companys headquarters in San Francisco are the result of the work of the interior design firm Studio O+A under the supervision of Denise Cherry. For Uber, a company known for regulatory battles, we were tasked with creating a room built for maximum efficiency - a room so built for work that no one would need to leave, says Cherry. This included a living room space, a kitchenette, and, of course, small focus rooms that double as nap rooms.3. GoogleGoogle employees do certainly get a lot of cool perks. Besides complimentary food and drinks (including a coffee bar with a full-time barista), access to an on-site gym, hair salon or swimming pool, they can also recharge in one of a number of free-standing nap pods in Googles Mountain View, California, headquarters.Courtesy of dezeen.com4. SamsungTech giants Silicon Valley headquarters features a wide range of amen ities. These also include dozens of nap pods and music listening rooms with coloured lighting to ensure people can find happiness and recharge at work. The so-called Chill Zone also contains foosball tables, games, flat-screen televisions and comfortable seating. All of that with the aim of creating a homely atmosphere for Samsungs employees.5. ZapposZappos - mainly through its CEO Tony Hsieh - has long been a believer in the power of office naps. Dating back to the companys early days, an enclosed place for cots, pods and couches have always been available to employees.Today, surrounded by a $250,000 aquarium full of vibrant saltwater fish, employees are encouraged to catch their zs while sleeping with the fishes. And its not only about fish. Other well-being perks at the online shoe retailers Las Vegas headquarters include massage chairs, regular wellness fairs, and on-site health screenings.6. Ben JerrysThe Vermont-based ice cream company was one of the earliest adopters of th e sleeping on the job programme. Its had an office nap room for more than a decade. The companys belief that a happy employee is a productive employee has given rise to a number of perks and benefits. Employees can choose from sponsored gym memberships, on-site yoga and Pilates classes, or personal trainers. Not mentioning all those gallons of complimentary ice cream, of course.7. NASAThis is where daytime napping started writing its history in the early 1990s.NASAs pioneering sleeping on the job study showed that 26 minutes of sleep improved cognitive performance by 34% and alertness by 54%. In their effort to fight sleep deprivation of their astronauts and other high-pressure workers, they started implementing so-called NASA naps.Later, this policy spread around the globe. It is now used by an increasing number of airline pilots on international flights.Courtesy of NASAThe importance of sleepIts fairly incredible to see the enormous impact insomnia has on our lives.Mary Gresham, a clinical psychologist from Atlanta, says sleep is essential as it is a mechanism of consolidating information, dealing with the events of the day, and recharging our energy. In an information-based economy, its hard to find anything that would have a greater effect on productivity than lack of sleep.People are staying up late more often and sacrifice the most valuable time for sleep they have - before the end of the day. In fact, research shows that every hour of sleep before midnight is worth two after midnight.Getting adequate sleep also reduces the risk of heart disease, dementia, diabetes and other common health issues. And in the most extreme circumstances, brains that arent well-rested may even start to devour themselves.Napping isnt just for toddlersThe best way to maintain your health and work ethic is, naturally, to get the right amount of sleep each night. Experts recommend 7 to 9 hours. But what if you cant keep up with this? The most viable alternative is to take 20-minu te power naps during the day. More and more people - and employers, too - are also beginning to recognise that sleeping on the job can make a positive difference in the workplace. And especially so during the second half of the workday when a lull is common. To kick things off, lets see what science has already to say about napping. The afternoon siesta has the power toRegainconcentration and recharge energy.Reduce depression and anxiety. The sleep decreases your levels of cortisol, a hormone thats responsible for elevating your blood sugar. Reverse the productivity-destroying effects of a poor nights rest.Boost your memory and information retention fivefold.Counteract impulsive behavior and boost tolerance for frustration.By the way, sleeping on the job also beats caffeine at improving your performance in areas like motor and verbal tasks. So basically if you could put a nap in a bottle, it would be a wonder drug far better than several cups of strong coffee. This should already be enough to view that slumbering employee as a productivity ninja rather than a slacker.Chairs, pods and nooksThese findings led some companies to capitalise on the trend of workplace napping. One of the first companies thats trying to overcome dated stigma related to sleep is MetroNaps. Their napping chairs called EnergyPods are designed specifically for office use and allow employees to barter 20 minutes of their time for better mood, creativity and learning.Since its founding in 2003, MetroNaps has sold thousands of nap pods to high-profile companies such as NASA, Google, Zappos, Cisco, Huffington Post or Procter Gamble. These portable bedrooms are designed to block out noise and light by way of a hooded dome. They come with features such as a privacy visor, built-in speaker system and gentle wake sequence of programmed lights and vibration. However, theres a price for a futuristic pod and its not pennies. Each sleek, shiny, capsule-looking chair sells for $13,000.But MetroNaps is not the only shark in the pool. There are several companies both here and abroad taking advantage of increasing awareness of the link between sleep and productivity. And the prices vary, too. Whereas the tranquility pod by Ohio-based Hammacher Schlemmer would cost you incredible $30,000, these wooden bunk pods by the London-based Podtime sell for less than $2,000. Regardless of the price, each of these companies has also successfully marketed their pods to hospitals, airports, fitness centers, universities and libraries.Courtesy ofMetroNapsA nap a day keeps the doctor awayMost of us were told that the harder and longer we work, the better it is. But nothing could be farther from the truth.Such attitude to work is not sustainable. We need to turn our attention to smart working instead. We need to listen to our own body and make it work in our favour. Its only natural that some of us will need to recharge in a meditation room from time to time. Or take a cat nap before an important m eeting. And many companies have decided not to turn a blind eye to these needs anymore and endorse seemingly useless but in fact very valuable types of activities - such as playing games or sleeping on the job.The discussion around workplace happiness and employees well-being started to bear fruit. Thats great. But welltotenstill have to wait a few moments before sleep pods of various types and sizes become a staple of employee benefit packages. And by the time this dream comes true, excuse me please.I can hear my nap pods calling me again.Share Your Feedback or Ideas in the Comments

Transitioning From Military to Civilian Careers
Transitioning From Military to Civilian CareersTransitioning From Military to Civilian CareersThere are a growing number of opportunities and resources for veterans, and these online resources can help you find them.Returning from combat and looking for a job is a daunting task.Positions in the private sector have become much mora elusive than they were when the wars began in the early 2000s, positiv many companies still have an anti-military bias. But with all the roadblocks in the job search, there are a growing number of opportunities for Americas returning heroes. There are fewer jobs, but there are more initiatives to hire people from the military, said Holly Mosack, director of military recruiting for Advanced Technology Services.Today, organizations are given federal tax breaks and other incentives to hire veterans. Also, more and more companies - including employment giants such as Home Depot, Wal-Mart and Waste Management - have targeted veterans in their recruitment strate gies.Mosack related that when she came home from Iraq in 2005 after serving as a captain in the Army, the private sector had done little to attract veterans into the civilian workforce. When I was out there, hiring veterans was more of an afterthought, she said. Even today, she continued, veterans comprise less than 10 percent of the workforces at the so-called pro-military companies. But shes happy to see more attention being paid to the problem. One of the men on the front lines of this trend is Michael McNelis, the director of sales and marketing at Training Camp, a type of private sector boot camp that teaches people information technology services that prepare them for high-tech jobs and certifications for Cisco, Microsoft and Comptia programs. About two years ago we got a lot of requests from veterans, McNelis said. He informed his company about the untapped potential of this growing labor source, and he said everyone seemed surprised as if they had never thought of it. Everybo dy looked at one another like I had 10 heads, he said. But Training Camp heeded McNeliss call to action and the company began targeting veterans with its Stepping Stone and Valor programs. Today, about 30 percent of the programs graduates are from the military.McNelis said that a veteran typically makes for a perfect employee because of his focus, attention to details and intense discipline. While he often comes out of the armed services with a degree of electrical and mechanical know-how, McNelis said hes extremely willing, and capable of learning a much more advanced skill set involving private sector software. As the wars wind down and troops come home, the demand for such training programs is increasing, McNelis continued, a pretty sizable increase over the past several months. Weve been working with a lot of vets whove exhausted their benefits.Other companies, colleges and government departments are offering varying programs designed at retraining and re-acclimating soldiers into civilian careers however, not all programs are accepted by the GI Bill of Rights. Make sure you check with your exit officer, McNelis said, adding that often a veteran isnt familiar with her financial limitations.Online resources for veteransGIJobs.com - A guide to post-military success, which includes sections on everything from education and resumes to wardrobes and body language.Military.com - This subsidiary of Monster provides a variety of military-related content, including a buddy finder and information about VA loans.RecruitMilitary.com - This job board is specifically designed for active members of the U.S. military with goal of connecting them with hiring managers and recruiters.USAJobs.gov - Run by the government, this jobs and information board welcomes all veterans, including those with disabilities, and provides them with assistance in their job search and help navigating the deluge of paperwork that comes with the transition out of the military.MOAA.org - Milita ry Officers Association of America, serving active, former and retired military officers. 3 Steps to Transitioning Careers As A LGBTQ Professional
3 Steps to Transitioning Careers As A LGBTQ Professional3 Steps to Transitioning Careers As A LGBTQ Professional Its official more and more companies are encouraging LGBTQ friendly policies and environments for employees. This is good news for LGBTQ job seekers, as finding a job in an inclusive office can improve your professional life and your well-being The Williams Institute reports supportive workplaces result in greater job commitment, improved workplace relationships, increased job satisfaction, and improved health outcomes among LGBTQ employees. This welches the atmospzu siche Sam Young was seeking when she began herbei job search as an openly queer, gender non-conforming woman after working in investment banking she explained, As a queer feminist, I wasnt on the same wavelength as most of the people that I worked with. Now Senior Director of Content, Creator, and Markets Operations at Spotify , Youngs journey can help some of those who are transitioning to a new career to find a job that accepts their whole self.If your identity is causing limitations between you and your colleagues, it may be time to consider a new workplace. At her bank job, Young had difficulty connecting with her co-workers due to her queerness. I sensed that many of my colleagues were awkward around me, not out of fear or hatred, but simply because they didnt know anyone else like me, she said. After years of being misgendered at the office, she recognized she wanted a change in her work environment. I wanted more than colleagues at work I wanted friends.Calling upon peers in the LGBTQ community and other friends can help you identify inclusive organizations and find the perfect job. Young informed her connections that she was beginning her job search and asked them to refer her to companies she may be interested in. She also sat down with friends and colleagues to find out what they enjoyed about their jobs to see what would potentially interest her as a ca reer. Young was eventually drawn to the tech industry because of its independent work ethic and welcoming atmosphere for LGBTQ people. She also joked, I also wanted to wear shorts to work after years of wearing suits. Attending LGBTQ-friendly meetups and conferences also provides a more formal atmosphere to network. Young recommends Lesbians Who Tech and LGBTQ-friendly Meetups to find fellow professionals. One way to show off your authentic self before meeting a potential employer in person is by sprucing up your resume. Young used Enhancv to make her resume feel more genuinely her . She credits the tool for allowing her to add sections about her favorite books and activities, life philosophy and a personal photo, saying, It gave potential employers more insight into who I am and whether I was a personality fit for their team.Rocking your signature style when networking and interviewing can ensure you find a workplace where you can present yourself comfortably. When starting h er career, Young was advised by a counselor to soften her look and present more femininely during her job search. But Young recognized that doing so could limit her potential to express herself I knew that pretending to be someone else during recruitment meant I would have to continue faking it at the workplace. Since she felt panzerschrank presenting as herself during her second job search, Young took the opportunity to do so. Its possible that I missed out on opportunities by coming to interviews in a suit and tie, but a company that would only hire me if I wore a skirt and pumps was not a company I wanted to work for, she said. Its not the responsibility or obligation of LGBTQ employees to be out at work. But for those professionals who are open about their identities, feeling comfortable expressing yourself in the workplace can be instrumental to succeeding in your career. At Spotify, Young finds herself in an environment where being queer and gender non-conforming is no longer t he elephant in the room I can be my authentic self when I walk into the door and its an enormous relief.
